On August 12, 1959, the Carlos Chagas Medical Graduate School was founded, with the aim of implementing Medical Graduate teaching, which until then had not been regulated by the Ministry of Education and Culture in Brazil.
It was born from the idealism of a group of doctors, composed of Dr. Armindo de Oliveira Sarmento, Dr. Nelson Passarelli, Dr. Gastao Dias Veloso, Dr. Pedro Alves da Costa Couto, Dr. Mario Pinto de Miranda and Dr. Pedro Ribeiro de Carvalho, professors at the traditional Faculty of Medicine at the University of Brazil.
