Hospital Universitário Gaffrée e Guinle

Inaugurated in 1929, with beautiful and imposing architecture, it was the greatest achievement of the Gaffrée and Guinle Foundation. A philanthropic work by Guilherme Guinle that grew in the field of ancient venereology and constituted one of the largest public health promotion institutions in the world. The achievement of the Hospital resulted in one of the most important chapters in the history of the School of Medicine and Surgery of Rio de Janeiro, the second medical school founded in Rio de Janeiro and the fourth in Brazil. With the name of Fundação Gaffrée e Guinle, at the time it was the largest in the city, with 320 beds, in 1966 it was incorporated into the School of Medicine and Surgery. From 1968 onwards, it became “Hospital Universitario Gaffrée e Guinle”, occasion of the major renovation to be readapted as a teaching hospital. In 1979, it joined UNIRIO, currently the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro, becoming part of its Center for Biological and Health Sciences (CCBS). In 1987, it became accredited as a “National AIDS Reference Center”. It is also a teaching hospital for the Alfredo Pinto School of Nursing with undergraduate and graduate students, students from the Schools of Nutrition and Biomedicine.
